HentaiTeca: Hentai, Adult Manga, Manhwa and Webtoons

HentaiTeca is a website built around hentai and the wider world of adult-oriented comics and animation that surrounds it — adult manga, adult manhwa, adult webtoons, doujinshi and the many related terms readers use to describe them. This page is the starting point for understanding what those terms mean, how they relate to one another, and what to expect from a site that focuses on this subject matter.

Hentai, manga, manhwa and webtoon terminology is used differently across regions, languages and communities, and two readers can mean slightly different things by the same word. Rather than assuming a single definition, HentaiTeca aims to explain these terms clearly, so that visitors — whether new to the subject or already familiar with it — have a consistent, accurate reference point.

Understanding Hentai as a Category

Hentai is a term most commonly associated with sexually explicit or adult-oriented anime and manga originating from Japan, though it is now used more broadly to describe adult-oriented comics and animation from a range of origins and styles. As a category, hentai spans many genres, art styles and formats, and it overlaps significantly with the adult manga, adult manhwa and adult webtoon categories described below.

Adult Manga, Adult Manhwa and Adult Webtoon: How the Terms Differ

These three terms are often used loosely, but they describe distinct things: origin, art style and publishing format.

• Adult manga refers to manga — comics originating from or drawn in a Japanese style — that contain sexually explicit or adult-oriented content.
• Adult manhwa refers to manhwa — comics originating from or drawn in a Korean style — that similarly contain adult-oriented content, and is often read in a full-colour, vertical-scroll format.
• Adult webtoon describes adult-oriented comics published in the webtoon format: a digital, vertical-scrolling layout that has become closely associated with manhwa but is used for comics from a range of origins.

In practice, these categories overlap. A single work might be described as an adult manhwa because of its Korean origin, and also as an adult webtoon because of how it is formatted and published.

Doujinshi and Doujin Explained

Doujinshi are self-published or independently produced comics, frequently created by fans and often based on characters, settings or stories from existing manga, anime, games or other media. Doujin is a broader, related term for independently produced creative work in general, of which doujinshi comics are one common form.

Pornhwa and Other Related Terms

Pornhwa is a term some readers use, often informally, for adult-oriented manhwa specifically. Usage of the term varies: some communities use it interchangeably with adult manhwa, while others apply a narrower or more specific meaning. HentaiTeca does not treat any single definition as the only correct one, and mentions the term here because readers searching for adult manhwa content sometimes use pornhwa instead.

Who This Site Is For

HentaiTeca concerns adult-oriented material and is intended only for visitors who have reached the legal age for viewing adult content in the place where they are located. That age differs between countries and regions, and it is each visitor's responsibility to know and follow the rule that applies to them. Further detail on eligibility and acceptable use is set out in the HentaiTeca Terms of Use.

Copyright and Creators

Manga, manhwa, webtoons and doujinshi are creative works, and the people who create them hold rights in what they make. HentaiTeca expects visitors to respect those rights, and provides a dedicated way for rights holders to raise a copyright concern. The DMCA and copyright information page explains how such messages are generally approached.
